WINGBACK Wingback started off as a crowdfunding experiment, exploring mass customisation as a viable business model. In an industry where disposable culture and sacrificing product quality for financial margins are the norm, is there a gap for personalised artisan goods? And can modern manufacturing methods be used to offer high quality, craft goods in a cost and time effective way, offering the best of both worlds? For each product, customers have a choice of leather and inscriptions and can then pick a thread colour or purchase a kit which includes a needle and number of different coloured threads, so they can add their personal touch to the finished product. Using a combinitation of digital manufacturing and traditional fabrication methods, each product can be produced in a fraction of the time of a purely traditional approach and with limited expertise. www.wingback.co.uk
PROJECTS
ABOUT
AIRBLADE TAP The Airblade tap is a sink mounted tap and hand drier. Air is blown out of two 0.8mm slots in excess of 400mph to scrape water off the users hands, drying them within 12 seconds. Extensive research and testing was done on the internal airpath and slot geometries in order to maximise motor efficiency and drying time whilst keeping sound power levels to a minimum. Aestheticallly, the main design challenge was on the connections between tubes. After exploring a number of manufacturing options, laser welding was chosen and the process was refined to produce a discrete 1mm weld between all parts. The Airblade tap costs up to 97% less than paper towels and produces up to 72% less CO2 than some other hand dryers.
SPEAKER The brief for this project was to produce a rugged speaker that could hold its own against any other speaker of its size, stand up to a weekend outdoors and play music for the whole trip. A machined Aluminium and PVC body with a soft mounted waterproof driver makes the unit weather and drop resistant. The optimised cavity is sealed and baffled which makes full use of the soft mounted driver. A 2800 mAh Li-ion battery powers the 20W integrated amplifier and gives a full weekends worth of music on one charge.
HYDRAFLASH Our eyes rely on shadows to recognise shapes. There are no useful cues if all the light comes from the same angle as the lens. You can’t establish a mood with an on camera flash, you cant emphasise features. You cant really do anything except capture the scene that a coal miner would see wandering round with a head torch on all day. The open brief behind Hydraflash was to design a product that would improve the built-in features on a digital camera. The on-camera flash is a feature that is avoided by many photographers because of its negative effect on photos, and therefore was a perfect challenge to tackle. The resulting design uses fibre optics to channel and redirect light down five flexible light pipes from the pop up flash. These new light sources can be arranged as a highly portable light studio for macro photography or create soft diffuse lighting for portrait photography.
Flux A concept for a pair of flexible sunglasses with removable flexible lenses and overmoulded TPU frames to create a product of varying stiffness at different points. The glasses are designed to withstand any abuse that an adreneline junkie can throw at them.
A LIGHT WEEKEND PROJECT A short, time constrained project. Design, material sourcing and manufacture all took place over one weekend off. Wood was salvaged from a reclaimed wood yard, metal offcuts were found in and turned in a local workshop and a number of interchangeable card lampshades were cut on a local laser cutter. See a video of the project here.
